Terri Strang Obituary

Terri Strang, nurse, animal lover, veteran, died at 64 in a hospital in Allentown, PA, on May 14, 2022. The cause was acute respiratory failure. Terri loved cats, horses, dogs, books, her four siblings, extended family and friends, and the WNBA, much in that order. She approached pets, patients and people with a sense of humor, respect for individuality, and patience, although with limits for people.

Terri was the youngest child of Mary Jane Cummings Strang and Everett Nelson Strang, Jr. and grew up in Big Stone Gap, VA. She graduated from Powell Valley High School and joined the U.S. Army Military Police Corps (1975—1976). She received a certificate in practical nursing from Lehigh County Community College in Schnecksville, PA in 1981. Her nursing career focused on care of the elderly and recovery patients in nursing homes and included Cedarbrook Fountain Hill Annex in Bethlehem, PA; Heritage Hall Health Care II in Big Stone Gap; Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Allentown; and The Gardens at Easton in Easton, PA.

She extended her military career with Army National Guard service in Pennsylvania (1979—1986) and in Virginia (1987—1991). During her time with the Virginia Guard, her transportation company was mobilized for Desert Storm.

Terri’s final and favorite service was dedicated to animals. She had rescued her two cats, the last of many pets, from feral life in an alley. Most recently as a volunteer, she transported dogs and cats from rescue groups to adoption homes, an activity that gave her daily joy.

Those left without Terri will miss her laughter, wit, book recommendations, her support of defenseless beings, and her company. Her siblings are Sallie Strang (Rich Gilbert) of Washington, DC; Bill Strang (Carolyn) of Kingsport, TN; Deborah Strang (Joel Swetow) of Los Angeles; and Cindy Strang (Curt Thomas) of Albany, KY. She also leaves a niece and three nephews, seven great-nieces and nephews, an aunt, and dozens of cousins. In memory of Terri, consider contributing to The Cat Shack (thecatshack.com), Alley Cat Allies (alleycat.org), Humane Pennsylvania (humanepa.org) or to an animal rights organization of your choice.  A remembrance service is planned for June 2023 in Big Stone Gap.
