Charlene Loyd Obituary

Charlene “Chuckie” Joyce Loyd, 89, of Mechanicsburg, died on November 20, 2020 at Messiah Lifeways following a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s and recently with Covid-19.  Born in Elgin, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Leota Rohles Bull.

Chuckie was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, William Loyd, her daughter, Julia Loyd Benner, and her brother, Jimmy Bull.  Surviving is her son, Charles W. Loyd (Brenda), grandson, Andrew Loyd (Lisa), great grandson, Noah, her son-in-law, Gary Benner, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Chuckie received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from West Virginia University, and a Certificate in Accounting from Elizabethtown College.  She was a Computer Programmer at UNIVAC, an Accounting & DP Instructor at HACC, and a Bookkeeper at Skelly and Loy Engineering Firm.  Chuckie retired from the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania as Director of Accounting following 23 years of service.

Chuckie was an active member of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church, Mechanicsburg.  She served on the Session; as a Trustee; and as an Elder.  Additionally, she served on numerous committees, as the Editor of the Church newsletter, and assisted with many other volunteer activities.

Following her retirement, Chuckie was Treasurer of the Harrisburg Kiwanis Club and an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the PA Chapter of the Society of Professional Engineers.  She volunteered for the Central PA Literacy Council and the Meals on Wheels Program.

Chuckie loved following the many athletic endeavors of her grandson from Little League and Youth Soccer through High School and College.  She was an avid bargain hunter and collector of teddy bears.

Chuckie’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff members at Messiah Lifeways who provided care for her.

Memorial services will be held at a future date to be announced.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Silver Spring Presbyterian Church, 444 Silver Spring Road, Mechanicsburg, PA  17050.
