Helen J. Merrick, 79, died February 14, 2025 at Embassy of Scranton Nursing Home, Scranton, Pennsylvania. She resided in Freeland most of her life.
She was born at Hazleton State Hospital on September 4, 1945 to Helen M. (nee Remak) and Anthony J. Merrick. She graduated in 1963 with honors from Freeland High School and in 1964 from the McCann School of Business in Hazleton.
She was a member of Saint Casimir’s R.C. Church. Freeland, and a social member of Freeland VFW Post 5010.
She was employed as a secretary for the fund-raising campaign following a major fire at the Mining and Mechanical Institute, now known as MMI Preparatory School, in Freeland in 1964, in the office of accountant Milton Lloyd, and by the Hazleton Standard Fuel Company,
She is survived by a brother, Edward R. Merrick, of Saint Petersburg, Florida; a niece, Cynthia L. Lazaro, of Monroeville, New Jersey, and a nephew, Thomas J. Merrick, of Red Hill, Pennsylvania. A brother, Thomas A. Merrick, died in 1906.
Her father owned and operated a store-on wheels and a grocery store in Freeland.
Burial will be in the Merrick family plot in Saint Casimir’s Cemetery, Freeland.
